New Year, New Goals

New year, new you? You're not alone. It's that time of year again when most of us make resolutions to better ourselves in some way, shape or fashion. But could we be setting ourselves up for failure by resolving too high of expectations? The answer is yes. Don't get me wrong. Setting goals is of course important but so is being realistic. As a matter of fact, establishing resolutions that are actually achievable is the healthy way to improve one's emotional, physical and/or mental state for the long haul.

Need some help setting healthy and attainable resolutions for the new year? We've got you covered. Here's my simplified take, on some of the my resolutions for the New Year.

Get In Shape: Body envy can be detrimental to your weight loss journey, so it's best to not torture yourself by admiring the bodies of others. Instead of setting unrealistic body goals, focus on making small steps toward improvement. Exercise can be fun and doesn’t have to feel like work. Incorporate something you enjoy into your routine. Chances are you will stick with it if you actually like what you are doing.

Cleaner Eating, More Plants: If you deprive yourself of foods you enjoy, chances are your diet won't last long. So rather than trying to suppress cravings, indulge yourself but only a little. Cut some calories, drink more water and get more sleep to help your body achieve a healthy and stable metabolic balance. Eat more plants, incorporate more color into your diet and reduce the amount of meat and dairy you consume.

Slow Down and Disconnect: This is a goal that is so difficult but one that I plan to work hard on. We live in a fast-paced world with so many things on the go and distractions all over the place. Try to maintain one “tech free” day where you are more present and invested in yourself and family for the day. Add some self-care into your routine, whatever that means for you. It can be as simple as meditation for 5 minutes, a long hot bath with a glass of wine or an hour long massage. Schedule that time for yourself into your planner, you are worth it.

Drink more water: We are often dehydrated and experience symptoms linked to not getting enough H2O. Drinking water can help balance and maintain body systems, it helps energize your muscles, keeps your skin looking fresh, and it helps your kidneys and liver remove waste and toxins from your body. There’s so many easy ways to increase your water intake for the day, they even have an app that will track it for you! One sneaky way to increase water in your diet that I love, is to eat foods that are high in water content, like watermelon, celery, cucumbers, and grapefruit. Decrease the amount of caffeine, sugar and alcohol you ingest.

Waste Less: Sometimes I am blown away with how much we throw away on a daily basis. One of my goals is to waste less and be more aware of the planet and how we are treating it. First things first, eliminate as much plastic as possible. Don’t use straws, plastic bottles, plastic bags, etc. There are some amazing options out there now for wasting less like glass or aluminum straws, package free products like the shampoo from Unwrapped (local Calgary brand). Shop local if you can, and plan your meals accordingly. I love heading to the Farmer’s Market and seeing what I can get that’s local. If you have the space, grow your own herb garden or outdoor garden. Since we moved into our house, 3 years ago now, gardening in the summers has becoming so important to us and a family affair. My kids love planting seeds and watching them grow. At Essentials by Nature, we offer a recycling program and have tried to switch all our packaging to glass, moving away from plastic. If you bring us five of your old containers, we will give you a discount on your next purchase!!

The easiest and simplest way to achieve some sort of big goal is to take small steps that lead you there. This is why I recommend setting goals you can quickly achieve as you work your way up to the ultimate goal. By doing things this way you are able to keep yourself inspired and motivated as you feel like you make more progress. And don't forget to always practice patience. After all, Rome wasn't built in a day. How can you possibly expect to transform yourself overnight? Get real with yourself to make sure those resolutions stick this time around.

Good luck!!!

Lots of love,
